What is SHA1

SHA-1 stands for Secure Hash Algorithm 1. It is a cryptographic hash function that is an improved version of SHA-0. Because there were certain flaws in SHA-0, the National Security Agency of the United States considered making some changes to it.

It is a cryptographically broken algorithm that takes an input and produces a message digest of 160-bit which is equivalent to 20-bytes. The SHA-1 hash is composed of 40 hexadecimal characters. In the beginning, it was considered secure as compared to other available hash algorithms, but in around 2005, most organizations replaced it with other more secure hash algorithms.
